My sister wants to do a Civil War tour for our next vacation (we went to Auschwitz memorial last time she picked she is a weird kid). She just had a Civil War themed birthday party which got her all excited. What are the best places? We live in Qatar so we do not know much about it.|||There are many well-preserved sites, and you will probably want to narrow your list, depending on how long you'll be in the US. Gettysburg in Pennsylvania is beautiful and was a turning point in the war, but most of the sites are in the South. There is Chickamauga Battlefield near Chattanooga, TN - very beautiful and sacred. There is Shiloh Battlefield near Corinth, MS and the Vicksburg Battlefield Memorial in Vicksburg, MS. Atlanta, GA has many Civil War-related sites. Charleston in South Carolina is a beautiful city to visit and also has Fort Sumter, where the first shots were fired in the Civil War.|||Gettysburg is probably the best site to visit because of its importance in the war and b/c its so well cared for (although there's an almost routine danger to the site of Walmart or some other business buying out a portion of the field to build a store upon it).
Other sites vary in how much is still in 'original' condition. Some sites of major importance are now parking lots for a Walmart!
If you get a chance, pick up Tony Horowitz' "Confederates in the Attic" about his own amusing 'tour' of Civil War sites, and how the experience went.|||If you go to Washington, D.C., you can take several day trips to different places of interest: Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, Ford's Theater, Anteim, Richmond, and Harper's Ferry are all within a day's drive or less.|||Gettysburg - the high water mark of the Confederacy
