How does the reality of war differ from the romantic image of war? How does war change the combatant? What do soldiers value in the midst of war?|||"Many of you here believe that war is all glory; but let me tell you, boys, it is all Hell" - Gen. Phil Sheridan.|||People have this idea of war as being glamorous, fun, romantic, adventurous, whatever. In reality it's brutal, often meaningless, terrifying, boring at times and psychologically damaging. I think a lot of people go to war thinking it'll be a big party or that it'll be short and sweet or fun, and then when they see combat, the reality sinks in and it leaves them scarred and disillusioned. I'm not a soldier, but I'd guess they'd value staying alive, basic acts of kindness and human decency and retention of their humanity.|||I honestly believe that there is no Romantic side to war at all. As an Archaeologist and Ancient Historian I am acquainted with too many wars old and new,the loss of human lives and the barbarities perpetuated by both sides of a conflict tell you otherwise.
It is clear that some wars have to be fought,WWII for instance, but that don't make them less cruel.
One thing is the Knight in shiny armour from the fairy-tales and another hard reality.|||The combat in real life is not as glamorous as the combat in Hollywood. In other words, Rambo doesn't exist.
