This should at least get you a passing grade.|||In 1973 after the up throw of Sharia of Afghanistan Mohammad Zahir Shah was overthrown Mohammed Daoud Khan was the President of Afghanistan, Soviet Union wanted Mohammed Daoud Khan to convert Afghanistan into a Communist and or Soviet Republic and or improve foreign relationships between the countries and tried to expand Soviet military into Afghanistan. Mohammed Daoud Khan refused it. In the mid 70's the Soviet Union accomplish setting up Communist political parties in Afghanistan which they tried to turn it into a Soviet Republic, Soviets wanted a country near Iran (which around that time Iran was American supported), which they accomplish during the Saur Revolution which turned Afghanistan into the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan which was now an allied to the Soviet Union.

The Democratic Republic of Afghanistan was more leftist and created national laws affecting all regions and started many schools and social reforms in Afghanistan, it promoted state atheism, usury, land reform ownership. This angered religious Sunni Islam muslims living in Afghanistan. The promotion of non-Islamic settings in a heavily Islamic holy place was what caused to form the Mujahideen groups in Afghanistan. Mujahideen fought to turn Afghanistan back into a Islamic repburepublic attacked Democratic Republic of Afghanistan members and Soviets also. Soviets intervene and helped the Soviet supported Democratic Republic of Afghanistan to take down Mujahideen groups.

At first the Mujahideen were losing, however the United States found this it was a perfect time to weaken the Soviet Union while in Afghanistan by supporting Mujahideen groups. Many nations including, Pakistan, United Kingdom and Egypt help support the Mujahideen to go up against the Democratic Government and the Soviets, just like Communist countries did in Vietnam by supporting the North VietnVietnamake down CapalCapitalisth Vietnam and the United States.

After nearly ten years of tense fighting the Soviets withdraw for economic reasons. The Democratic Republic of Afghanistan was left alone to fight against multiple Mujahideen groups which in till 1992 it was overthrown.

In 1993 the Islamic State of Afghanistan was formed, (famous Mujahideen fighter during the war) became leader of the Islamic State of Afghanistan. Islamic State of Afghanistan had a weak government, rarely any laws affected it's people and the government rarely had control on anything.

In 1993 the Taliban was formed. It fought the Islamic State of Afghanistan between 1993 - 1996 also known as the Afghan Civil War. In 1996 Taliban overthrown the Islamic State of Afghanistan, Mohammed Omar monarch of the Taliban government also known as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan ruled 80% of the country, the Islamic State of Afghanistan was pushed back to the North only contrcontrollingof the land and whiched formed the Northern AllieAlliance Islamic Emirate also shelter Osama Bin Laden al-Qaeda forces.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan had stricter Sunni Islam Sharia rules, the Taliban ruled strictly on Islamic laws.

In 1998 Taliban forces killed 11 Iranian Diplomats which then later the government of Iran supported the Northern Alliance which bordered Iran.

In 2001, a day before 9/11 Ahmad Shah Massoud was assianted by Taliban forces.|||It's a good conflict to research simply because Russia marched in with a crap load of tanks, troops, and artillery only to be receive a beat down but poorly armed Afghan farmers and the Taliban. Oh and we must not forget that the US played a significant roll in funding the resistance to Soviet occupation along with providing weapons.

There's tons of info on the net and you could research Charlie Wilson who was the leader of gaining funding and support for the resistance.|||it dragged on for 10 long years and the Americans where helping the Afghans by giving them weapons to knock out Russian tanks.

in the end the Russians pulled out
