During this long period the military and the war mongers kept telling Americans things were getting better and that the US could not/should not leave.
Americans were told like now to trust the military .Obviously the 15 years of the military lying/obfuscating/rationalizing showed clearly that they could NOT be trusted .
No matter what they say,most military people,especially the Brass love wars and if you doubt that ,go read the history of General Paton as but one example.
Like in Iraq today ,we are told that we were in Vietnam to bring democracy,freedom and liberty to the Vietnamese but like in Iraq ,this was pure crap.
Psychiatrists will tell you that Bush and the military's refusal to admit defeat and leave is simply because they have so much invested of themselves in these wars that to admit defeat would be devistating psychologically so they keep lying and obfuscating.
It is in fact the EGOS of these people that saw the Vietnam war go on for 15 bloody years and now in Iraq for almost 5 years.
Remember the US won WW11 in LESS THAN 5 YEARS .
Like in Vietnam ,there are always ups and downs in the Iraqi war with some postive results in the last month or so (ONLY MILITARY NOT THE ALL IMPORTANT POLITICAL PROGRESS) but make no mistake that like in Vietnam the US is in the middle of a CIVIL WAR and there will be NO VICTORY but a hell of a lot more body bags used.
THE US HAS LONG AGO LOST THE IRAQI WAR BUT BECAUSE SO MANY FROM BUSH TO THE GENERALS TO THE LOVED ONES OF THE SLAUGHTERED US SOLDIERS ,THEY REFUSE TO ADMIT DEFEAT BECAUSE TO DO SO MEANS ALL THIS CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY HAS BEEN A BLOODY WASTE OF TIME , MONEY AND LIVES .
Over 3500 US soldiers and over 400,000 innocent Iraqi civilians have died for NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING ..

The Conservatives are just in denial|||WE forfeited in Vietnam as I understand it. even with thier hands tied by the damn politicians, our troops racked up a ten to one kill ratio and won most of the battles. the problem then as now, is the politicians and a very vocal minority hell bent on American failure! WE can loose to be sure! but the appeasers donot have fellow travelers in these islomofacists.

ANSWER: to the guys that make missiles and get huge paychecks from the Defense dept., they would win ANY war... past, present and future|||deja vu eh?|||There is one major difference between Vietnam and Iraq and WWI and WWII--who we were fighting. In the World Wars we fought against nations that were aggressive and that followed the general principles of "civilized" wars. Thus we were able to set goals and obtain the victories that produced conclusive evidence of a victory in the future.
With the Viet Cong and Al Qida we have no set parameters by which "victory" can be measured. Thus a "conquest" of Iraq that took our forces 3 weeks to accomplish is lasting much longer as we seek to root out those who do not "play by the rules of war". This takes much longer and requires constant updating of plans and goals. Add to this the Democrats who are constantly fighting against a plan that they voted for in the beginning, and one can see why we have not achieved the overall victory that Bush had in mind.
In Vietnam, we "lost" not because the Army could not accomplish the task, but because of the interference from the politicians back home. It was so bad that Navy ships were told that they could fire on positions A, C, E and F, but not B,D, G or H. Once the Viet Cong figured that out they would attack in A,C,E,F and then run to B,D,G,H and watch the fireworks.
To win in Iraq we need to have two things accomplished--the Democrates must get behind Bush and support victory in the war. To do this they must qet over their personal desires for political gain and begin to be the Americans the people need them to be. Our very well being is being sold out for political gain, and the deaths cause by their inaction will be upon the heads of people like Reid and Murtha and others who see no good in what is accomplished. Secondly, the people of Iraq need to step up and begin assisting the troops in their fight by pointing out those who support the enemy, even if it is other countries like Iran.
I am really getting sick and tired of hearing all the liberials giving false information and saying Bush went after Iraq because of the oil, or because of lies, or whatever. It has been proven that the information that Bush had when he ordered the Army into Iraq was the same information the Democrates saw and believed, the same info that Intellegence Agencies of France, England, Germany, etc also had and supported. Saddam was a problem that had to be addresses and Bush did so. What was the link to Al-Qida? The financle and medical support that he provided! You have to remember that Saddam didn't like what Bush's father did to him about Kuwait!|||The key similarity is in the lack of strategy.
The USA lost the Vietnam war because it never had a strategy to win - the objective was always to avoid losing, and never to win. For a while it worked - they avoided losing for a while.
To WIN you have to have a strategy aimed at winning. The nearest the USA has come to this in Iraq is George's "Surge" - far too little far too late.|||Nobody told me that we could win Vietnam. Bush is being hard headed about Iraq|||What USA needs to win is more wil ,USA should terrify Iraqis as I did during my Goverment, Abductions and death squads is the recipe.And over all US military must be convinced of the Justice of their job.Even my Chaplains were convinced of the need for torture, as this man of God, Chaplain Christian Von Wernich. He helped us a lot during torture sessions.Unfortunately he is now facing imprisonment for lifetime.
